Artist Statement

Nick Ward

My art is the necessary response to new spiritual revelation, as I walk the ups and downs of life with a Savior that never leaves my side. Through my art I seek to visually communicate a theology of Scripture in contemporary daily life.

My biblical and Prophetic art specifically focuses on color, texture, and movement in order to communicate that which goes beyond the limitations of the written and spoken word.

I do not paint merely for the sake of art itself, but rather for the glory of God. My art is a wonderful gift of the interdisciplinary work of art and theology. My hope is that those who give consideration to my work would be as blessed as I have been making it.

Biography

I have had a lifelong pursuit of art and ministry. From the time I could hold a crayon I have loved art. I do not really remember a time in my life where art hasn’t been a part of who I am. In fact, I was in my room drawing at twelve years old, when I received my call from God into ministry. I struggled with these two things in my life, as they seem mutually exclusive at times. It was not until recently that God has removed all distinctions between these two disciplines for me.

My formal art education in oil painting did not begin until my first year of college at the Flint Institute of Arts. I graduated from Olivet Nazarene University in 2003 with a B.A. in Fine Arts with a concentration in painting and a minor in cross-cultural ministry. I met the love of my life at Olivet, and after graduating there we both attended Asbury Theological Seminary. We were married while in Seminary, and I graduated with a certificate in Biblical Studies. We were both Ordained in the Church of the Nazarene in 2011. The next 12 or so years have been spent serving in local churches and raising three amazing children.

My life has been unique in its cultural diversity. This started in high school where I was the minority within my school. I have a white-collar education, while making my living, working blue-collar jobs. I am a holiness preacher and an artist. I am a romantic dreamer that loves ideas, theology, and color. As I follow Christ, I want for my work to challenge people to know Christ, love more, and dream bigger. It is my hope that people will find this in both my preaching, and in my paintings.
